Recently Mojang posted the new 1.8 pre-release on their blog! https://mojang.com/2014/08/minecraft-1-8-pre-release-the-bountiful-update/
From the blog:
It’s time for us to pre-release the next major Minecraft update, the Bountiful Update! This will bring Minecraft to version 1.8, and should be officially be published in the launcher on Tuesday, September 2. This is the update that to date has taken the longest time to create (over 300 days), and is the result of many, many changes.
In the pre-release they added a new default skin!
More additions and changes to the game can be found here on the Minecraft wiki: http://minecraft.gamepedia.com/1.8#Changes
HOW TO DOWNLOAD THE PRE-RELEASE:
- Open up the Minecraft launcher and select "New Profile"
- Check the box that says, "Enable experimental development versions ("snapshots")
- You should get a pop-up saying these builds are not stable and may corrupt your world, (if you're ok with this then, "Yes")
- Where it says "Use version" open the drop-down menu and scroll to the top of the list where it says "snapshot 1.8-pre1"
- Once you have selected that, press save profile and you should be able to play! (I'd recommend creating a new world to try out the update)
Keep in mind this is only a PRE-RELEASE so there are bugs in the game.
