I believe the issue you had relates to the person not having a island of their own at the time. I believe this because a friend of mine teleported to my island before making or joining a island and could edit everything and use chests.

If you fall off your island using /spawn instantly takes you to spawn and as you cannot die in the spawn it saves you allowing falling to not be a issue but using /is kills you but keeps you items on the island. A possible fix is to put a wait time until you are teleported to spawn or to your island.
